President’s Letter
As I write this letter, I took a little time to think back and reflect on our 2018 Golf Season. Certainly, the pluses outweighed the minus. Steve and his crew continue to provide us with excellent playing conditions, membership and revenue from membership continues to grow, our member leagues are vibrant and add value to our golfing experience and participation in our special member events has increased. Rick, Tony, Al and Julia worked hard on keeping expenses within the budgeted revenue and we will finish the year with a positive cash flow.
The weather, especially October and November, certainly was a minus. Planned fall work on the course was not accomplished and outside play revenue was down. Revenue for outside tournaments was also down but that was because of a conscious effort by the Board to strike a proper balance on non-Monday outside events. The clubhouse periodically shows its age and requires repairs.
Let Us Know
The Board and the Committees face many challenges throughout the year in our efforts to provide you the best possible conditions and golfing experience. We build the next year’s budget in October and November. We send out invoices to our current members early in January. The BOD focus now is to encourage members to commit early, so we can accurately predict membership and revenue for the coming year. While our membership has grown the last couple of years there was always the unknown as we headed to opening day. Many members simply did not pay until the course opened.
We want you back, but if you must leave us, please let us know your intentions as early as possible.
If you are coming back for the 2019 season, please let us know. To encourage you to commit early we have revamped the Guest Pass Policy. You can review the changes in the October Fox or give Julia a call if you have any questions.
Members are also a source for generating the new members we require to continue to grow. If you are happy with the condition of the course, with the member tournaments, with the BSCC leagues, with the pace of play, and with the number of reciprocal courses to name a few, then tell your friends and invite them to join you as a member of BSCC.
“Smart Pass” Discounted Guest Passes

THINK SPRING
This will be the last Fox Newsletter for 2018. My optimistic side notes that as you receive this Fox on December 15 we have started our countdown (G minus 120? and counting) to the 2019 season. For those who are quickly trying to do the math, my SWAG is an opening day of 14 April.
In closing I wish you and yours a happy holiday season and a safe and prosperous winter.

December, 15th, 2018
As we close out the year, we are projecting a positive 2018 cash flow of approximately $45K. Add that to the $32K we started the season with and we should end the season with $77K in cash as we start the new year.
Previously, the finance committee recommended a $50K minimum cash position to begin each year with, to pay expenses prior to receiving new dues money. So when it is all said and done, we did have a good year but we do not have significant dollars to make any big expenditures.
We took in more in stock payments than we had to pay out so we had a surplus this year. The surplus was $15K. So the $77K in cash was not all income from dues, green fees and carts. I will be recommending to the Board that we take that surplus and set it aside for future stock payments. I do think if we can continue with our increase in membership, we may have additional surpluses over the next few years and an opportunity to further increase this surplus.
We did exceed our membership dues budget and our cart revenue budget. We did fall short of our green fee projection and that was in part because of the few Friday events from the previous year and also, no outside play on the days BSCC is private (Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Holidays).
Everyone will be receiving their 2019 invoices the last week in December. Those will be sent via email. The paper invoices will be mailed after the first of the year.
Tony Lupino and I are working on contacting all of the members (40+) that still have outstanding balances for 2018. Those are charges from the restaurant and golf shop.
If you have a balance, it would most helpful if you can get that taken care of as soon as possible.
Sincerely
Rick Funaro

Well winter is here for good and the golf season at the Ballston Spa CC is over. Let’s hope spring will come early for next year’s golf season. Steve and his crew with the help of several members have the golf course all set for winter. I don’t think you will find too many golf courses in the area that the members are willing to volunteer when help is needed.
We still have several members whose bills are overdue. We have to pay Henry’s and Todd for all the charges to your account by the 15th of the next month. If you still owe money on your bill, please get it paid because we need to close our books at year end. Last year we had to turn four members over to a collection agency. We prefer not to do that but if we have no choice then we will.
Todd and I (mostly Todd) try to make your golf experience at Ballston Spa an enjoyable one. We are always open to any concerns or ideas you may have so feel free to let us know.
We have had several new members sign up for next year already, so it looks like we will continue to grow our golf family. If you know of someone that is contemplating joining a golf club send him or her our way.
This was my first year on the board and I wasn’t sure what I was getting into. I have to say it has been interesting and challenging at times. But I can tell you the board puts in a lot of time and effort to make sure the golf course is running smoothly and efficiently and your experience is a good one. As a member you have the option to be an owner and when you own something you tend to take more of an interest in how things are done.
By the time you read this, Christmas will be right around the corner. I would like to wish all of you a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Tony Lupino

It has officially come to the end. Golf season 2018 has been put to rest. However, it has been a great year and I plan to spend some my winter getting ready for 2019. As I have been told by both Todd and John , winter is the time to get your golf game in shape for the spring. As I am getting ready, I would like to once again thank the membership committee for all their work this past year. My sincere thank you to the committee members: Joyce Bassett, Don Cramer, Joan Johnson, Phil Klein, Todd Manderson Kate Oppedisano, and Bill Tucker. Additionally, I would like to thank Dean Herrick for taking and editing new photos for both the brochure and website. Also, thanks to Todd Duval for printing the new brochures so beautifully and quickly. We already have several new members who signed up for the 2019 season. You can go to the website to see and/or print the 2019 New member brochure and application. Please feel free to share with your friends and family.

We had to rush to get the course winterized this year. Mother Nature hasn’t been kind these past few months. Record rainfall isn’t good for anyone, for the golf course or for playing golf. The cold weather moved in in early November. We were able to get the golf course all sprayed up for snow mold. We then deep tinned the greens and topdresses the greens with sand. The irrigation system was blown out. The final step was putting the greens covers on. I had the emails sent out for volunteers and we had a good turnout. I am glad we got our covers down that day because we got 6 inches of snow the next day. Thank you to all the volunteers that helped on that day. I am very happy that all our greens are now covered right before the weather turned for the worse. Below pictures are from November 16 and 20.
It has been a weather roller coast this year. I started out the season with putting out a lot of irrigation water in May and June, and then ending the season with too much rainfall. I think the course came through the season pretty well. The turf was pretty consistent all over the course even though we have Mother Nature to battle with. We were also able to complete another green surround. The third green surround was selected for this season. I think this surround turned out pretty good and is a huge improvement from what was there before. Thank you to all the volunteers that helped with this large project. I couldn’t have done it without you. I hope everyone has a great holiday season and hope to see everyone in the spring. |

It's mid-December, so unless you celebrate Hannuka, Kwanzaa, Saturnalia, the signing of the Yap Constitution, the anniversary of the coronation of King Topou the First, or Christmas, you probably don't have much to do. That's why the BSCC Board pays me big bucks to keep you entertained.
With this in mind, I You-Tubed every Jeopardy! broadcast, from the show's beginning until the end of November 2018 and made note of every Jeopardy! answer that involved "golf", going back to September of 1983.
And if you believe that, you probably believe in the Tooth Fairy and are convinced your congressional representatives are working hard in your best interests.
But enough. Here we go, over 800 answers for you to question. Not all the answers involve golf as we know it (there's one about the Volkswagen Golf and another where the founder of Reykjavik has the first name "Ingolfur"), so have at it. If there are any you don't get (and there won't be many), shoot off an email to me (wtucker2@nycap.rr.com), and I'll be happy to give you the answer (cost: 1 sleeve of ProV1's per item). Or, you can go here http://j-archive.com/search.php?search=golf&submit=Search . Place your cursor over the dollar amount and the question will appear at the end of the line as an answer. Good luck.
